Household Waste Recycling Centre

The Household Waste Recycling Centre is a free service run by Hertfordshire County Council for the residents of Stevenage. It is located on Caxton Way, which is off Gunnels Wood Road to the West of Stevenage. It is open Monday to Sunday 8.00am until 6.00pm and closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day.

The Household Waste Recycling Centre takes the following materials:-

  • Cans and Foil
  • Car Batteries
  • Cardboard
  • Engine Oil
  • Fluorescent Tubes
  • Fridges and Freezers
  • Glass
  • Green Garden Waste
  • Household Batteries
  • Mobile Phones
  • Paper
  • Plastic Bottles
  • Scrap Metal
  • Textiles
  • Toners and Inkjet Cartridges
  • Tyres
  • Wood

Materials that cannot be recycled at the centre include:-

  • construction waste
  • demolition waste
  • excavation waste
  • some DIY waste depending on quantity

The County Council site isn’t obliged to take the kind of material above but will take small quantities based on the following guidance from the Stevenage Borough Council website:-

The following maximum limits will apply for specific individual materials but the mixtures of materials will reduce the individual material quantity, e.g. 2 full dustbin bags of soil but only 4 doors in the same single visit.

  • 4 full dustbin bags, or equivalent, of soil, rubble, bricks, plaster
  • 8 doors
  • 1 bathroom suite (1 bath, 1 sink, 1 toilet and cistern)
  • 4 small kitchen cupboards
  • 2 large kitchen cupboards
  • 1 small shed
  • 1 small greenhouse
  • 3 fence panels (6′ x 6′) and 4 posts

Please do not attempt to dispose of construction, demolition or excavation materials that exceed the above limits. For additional info on materials which cannot be accepted check the Household Waste Recycling Centre’s Unacceptable Waste Products webpage.

Larger household items might be suitable for the collection by the council’s Special Collection Service for Large Items

Material which isn’t acceptable at the Recycling Centre or cant be collected by the council can be disposed of by:-

  • Hiring a skip or a ‘skip bag’.
  • Employing a registered private waste disposal site or recycling company to collect your waste.
  • Delivering your waste to a licensed private disposal or recycling company.
