Recycling

We are very keen to see as much domestic waste as possible recycled.

The council helps with this in two ways :-

  • Local recycling – Collections of recycleable materials from your doorstep.
  • Recycling Centre – At the Recycling Centre a much wider range of materials can be recycled along with items which the bin men will not take because they are too large.

There are some more ways to recycle stuff which will also benefit the community and help stop rubbish being put in to land fill.

These are:-

Freecycle

They say one person’s rubbish is another’s treasure. Freecycle is the place to see this proven.

If you have anything that you are thinking of throwing away. that could be of use to someone. then offer it to Stevenage Freecycle. You can also get stuff for free from Freecycle. Freecycle is a community group which allows subscribers to offer stuff, they might have thrown away in the past, to other subscribers for free.

You can offer anything as long it is :-

  • Free – You are not allowed to charge for anything on Freecycle. It must be FREE.
  • Legal – It must be legal
    • No pirate software or DVDs.
    • You must legally own it.
  • Appropriate for all ages – please don’t offer “adult” material.
  • Safe – Electrical goods should be in safe working order.
  • No animals- Freecycle isn’t an appropriate place to trade animals.

The Stevenage Furniture Recycling Scheme was set up to collect unwanted good quality furniture, household goods and electrical items from the Stevenage area. These items are available to all Stevenage residents. Prices are reduced for those on a low income.

If you have any good quality furniture or household items to donate please call the scheme on 01438 362900, or send an email to info@stevenagefrs.org.uk . If possible, please try to give them 2 weeks notice for booking a collection.

All Furnishings that include upholstery must conform to the appropriate ‘Fire Safety’ regulations in order for the scheme to be able to pass them on. Therefore, any furniture of this type must have the necessary fire safety labels attached and must state that the covers and fillings are both cigarette and match-resistant.
